Sculpture

I have been sculpting with various types of clay since I was about 9 or 10, but it wasn't until college that I began focusing on improving my skills. As a child I used colorful, non-hardening clay, but I have since graduated to using Super Sculpey over a foil armature. For larger pieces I also use wire underneath the foil for added stability. I mostly sculpt for fun, but I occasionally get commissions for sculptures as well.

Phoenix the Skywing

The second dragon sculpture I've made to date, with this one I took the techniques I practiced on Tern the Icewing and further advanced them. The wings on this sculpture are much more sturdy and I was able to pose them in different ways before baking due to the wire mesh armature under the clay. The character is a Skywing/Nightwing hybrid and so has combined features from both those tribes. Made in 2019, Wings of Fire dragons belong to Tui T Sutherland

Chinese Zodiac Animals

These sculptures of the twelve Chinese Zodiac signs were made for the Minneapolis College of Art and Design’s annual Art Sale in 2012. I sculpted two of each animal so that people could have two different versions to choose from. Each animal is a different breed or has a unique coat pattern from it’s partner.
